In battle, you just use A to attack and B to jump or use special abilities and X to open a menu which allow you to give command to your friends or use an item. The controls are responsive and easy to learn, and the menus are very easy to use and cleaned out.

While this battle system is not the best I've encountered, it's very innovative. It's very innovative, as battles are random, but they take place in a side-view screen, and you directly control Cless (the main protagonist), while the other characters (when there is any) are controlled by the computer, you only give them instructions. The main difference between Tales of Phantasia and another random RPG is the battle system. The game is overall very well presented and take place in an interesting fantasy world, that shares elements of the real world but where magic, monsters, etc exists. Note that as the game is from Japan, only the Game Boy Advance version is officially existing in western countries, but decent fan translated versions of the game can be found on the internet to play the Super NES version in another language.

Welcome to my review for Tales of Phantasia, which is a well-known action RPG for the Super NES (and re-released later on the Play Station and the Game Boy Advance). Une belle claque toujours très agréable à jouer, et clairement un titre à (re)découvrir pour les amateurs du genre. Grâce aux fans, il est désormais possible de découvrir un jeu de rôle qui ne se hisse peut-être pas tout à fait à la hauteur des bijoux que restent Final Fantasy VI et Chrono Trigger, mais qui n'en est vraiment pas loin. Derrière une réalisation exceptionnelle pour son support se cache une aventure solide et prenante, quoiqu'un tantinet classique, et dont le principal défaut reste d'être restée cruellement cantonnée au Japon jusqu'à la sortie de la version Game Boy Advance. Parmi les titres les plus ambitieux et les plus impressionnants jamais parus sur Super Nintendo, Tales of Phantasia pourra se vanter d'avoir mélangé avec succès des éléments empruntés aux J-RPG au tour par tour et des mécanismes d'action-RPG dans une formule suffisamment bien pensée pour avoir engendré une série encore vivace de nos jours - et qui n'a toujours renié en rien ses fondamentaux.
